Backed by new sponsors KFC, this year’s Senior National Squash Championships served off on Wednesday Evening at the Georgetown Club with some competitive first night action.
This tournament, which will climax on Sunday with the finals, is being used as preparation for Guyana’s hosting of the Senior Caribbean Area Championships in August and the Junior CASA in Trinidad in July and among the early winners were Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, Nicolas Verwey, Adam Alves, Sarah Lewis and 41-year-old Regan Pollard, who beat Robert Fernandes 3-0 in an entertaining over-40 encounter.
The talented 15-year-old Ince-Carvalhal, the grandson of National Squash Coach Carl Ince, produced some very good Squash to beat 27-year-old Jonathon Antczak 11-6, 11-4, 11-8 for 3-0 victory, while Verwey defeated Regan Rodrigues 3-0 after winning the first game 11-3, the second 11-5 and jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third game to eventually win 11-4.
Despite the 3-0 score-line, the match-up between Pollard and Fernandes was one of the fiercely contested matches of the night.
Watched by spattering of spectators, the contest was punctuated by long rallies, good use of the Court and smart Squash from the experienced pair.
A clinically executed drop shot from Fernandes took score to 5-8 before Pollard ended the second game 11-6.
The third saw intensified action as the players produced a riveting display as the pendulum swung back and forth before Pollard took a six-point lead to win 11-5 to win the match 3-0.
In other results:
Adam Alves beat Gianni Carpenter 8-11, 11- 4, 11-5, 11-7.
Sarah Lewis defeated Teija Edwards 11 – 0, 11- 1, 11- 0
Madison Fernandes received a walkover from Tian Edwards.
Play was scheduled to continue last evening from 5.30 PM when the Over-50 Men’s category began with two matches before players in the Men’s Over-40 match went into action.
The Men’s Open and quarter final matches in the Women’s Open were also scheduled for last night. (Sean Devers)
