DEAR EDITOR,
It is with great joy in my heart that I welcome His Excellency Nana Addo Danka Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana, to Guyana. It is an exciting moment for peoples of African origins in Guyana, and for all Guyanese.
Ghana is one of the most prosperous countries on the African Continent and blessed with enormous human and mineral resources. Ghana is a developing nation which boosts high quality Universities and educational facilities. Ghana’s Government seems to know what it is doing in trying to map its future development in Human resources, architecture and infrastructure. I take the opportunity to wish Ghana abundant prosperity in the future.
I may be wrong, but I never saw any wealthy and successful African nation offer any kinds of grants, infrastructural development, scholarships, etc., to Guyana. It is my understanding also that Ghana is opening up its country and hearts to the African Diaspora. This is a great gesture coming from the heart of a great President and a country with a future and vision for leadership. This wisdom strikes bountifully in my heart and encourages me to offer a prayer for the President, his government and the country as a whole. Positive thoughts produce positive results. Ghana will reach great heights in development in the world.
However I wish to use the opportunity to encourage this great President and great country to offer to Guyanese of all ethnicities, opportunities for scholarships to attend its various universities and technical institutions, as that which India has been doing for decades. Guyanese of all races were granted scholarships in various disciplines by the Government of India: medicine, agriculture, dentistry, journalism etc. Also numerous Guyanese from all ethnicities benefited and benefit from various courses and specialties through the international famous ITEC Project. Hundreds of thousands of persons of all ethnicities have been granted cultural scholarships to study India’s various Art, music and dance techniques. I encourage President Nana Addo to create a legacy for his country and springboard for the prosperous countries of Africa to emulate by offering Guyana similar opportunities.
India pioneered the Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Card. With this identity Card, Indo Guyanese (One parent must be of Indian origin), can visit India without a Visa, conduct business, import/export, purchase properties, invest, etc. It is comparable to the American Green Card or Resident Alien Card. This would be a great thing for Ghana to adopt. From what I’ve heard, Ghana is encouraging Africans in the Diaspora to return, invest, build lives and grow with Ghana. This is truly remarkable. Other stable and developing Nations of Africa need to reach out similarly to its Diaspora.
I may not be a member of the African Diaspora but I am a great respecter of Africa: its history; its civilizations; its inventions that helped human development and civilizations. I respect and love Africa for being the land of the original people from whom all other peoples originated. I also wish to visit Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and other states without the hurdle of having to apply for a visa. I am happy that Guyana and Ghana have agreed to reciprocal visa-free travel.
Thank you, Sir, His Excellency President Nana Addo, for visiting our country. I wish you had more time so you could travel and see the great sites and enjoy the spirits of the peoples our country has to offer. See you soon, Ghana!
Sincerely,
Hajji Dr Roshan Khan
