In a letter seen by Kaieteur Sport, head of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA); Steve Ninvalle, has requested to the head of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA); K.A. Juman-Yassin, to allow star fighter Keevin Allicock to travel overseas to prepare for the Pan American Games that will be contested in Lima, Peru this July-August.
Ninvalle noted in the letter that, “I am pleased to inform you of the vast improvement in the attendance of boxer Keevin Allicock at training sessions since our recommendation of sanctions against him. Mr. Allicock has had an unblemished attendance record since May 26 and has assumed the role of a focused athlete cognisant of the task at hand. Officials of the association met with Mr. Allicock and his coach recently and were assured by both of his (Allicock) resolute intention to continue the hard work. Taking all into consideration, the GBA recommends that the hold placed on Mr. Allicock’s overseas training programme and payment of stipend be lifted.”
Ninvalle further noted that that instead of Cuba, an alternative destination of Ecuador is on the cards, “I have been in constant contact with president of the Cuba Boxing Association Alberto Puig who has confirmed that the Cuba senior national team will be in Ecuador for a training camp comprising Cuba, Chile and the host country. Mr. Puig has extended an invitation to Guyana to have Allicock train with the Senior Cuba side that is preparing for the Pan Am Games. I have also had detailed discussion with the president of the Ecuador Boxing Association Alex Gonzales who has assured that the altitude in Ecuador, and training at his country’s high performance centre will enhance Mr. Allicock’s training and preparation for the Pan Am Games. The recommendation is now being made that Mr. Allicock and coach travel to Ecuador for the training camp.”
Allicock and his coach are expected to leave on June 16 and return on July 6.
