Team McNeil/Cameron were last evening trying their utmost to put the final touches, against the odds of the rainy weather, to have a prompt start
today from 9.00hrs when the inaugural ‘Mackenzie High versus Multi’ Independence Day track and field championship takes place at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Linden.
The planners, Mackenzie High School’s former athlete Shawn McNeil and Floyd Cameron past sprinter from ‘Multi’, said that there were no thoughts of postponing the activity and regardless the two arch rivals will battle it out over 35 events including relays to see who will emerge winners even though both schools will get $100,000 and a smart 50 inch television at the end of the day.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has given its backing through the intended presence of AAG president Aubrey Hutson, who likes the idea of inter school rivalry and will be there as an official along with Member of Parliament Audwin Rutherford among other top officials will witness the one day championship.
The two schools named some of their athletes for today’s clash and the Christianburg Wismar Secondary ‘Multi’ will be led by coach Moses Pantlitz his charges includes the present CARIFTA Games Bronze medalist Shaqua Tyrrell who will be competing in her pet event the 1,500m, while Tuqua Wilson will be in the 100 and 200m sprints, Daniela Hackett in the long and triple jumps, Jonathan Copeland, who is well known in the field events, will run the relays and the triple jump, Deon Richards will compete in the long and triple jumps.
Their opponents for the day, Mackenzie High School have named some of their athletes who will be under the watchful eyes of Coach Johnny Gravesande. Among them are the outstanding Deshanna Skeete, who will be involved in the 100, 200 and 400m races, Jasey Copeland who is one of the most promising female field athletes and who will be throwing the shot put and discus, Seon Johnson who will be featured in the sprints 100, 200 and 400m races, Omar Jones in the 100, 200 and 400m races and the long jump also and Shenia Liverpool who will be contesting the triple and long jumps and the 200m race.
Knowing that both schools have been integral in the reasons behind why the Upper Demerara / Kwakwani District 10 are the most decorated districts in the history of the nationals, it will be a sampling of these athletes who have done the region proud.
Take into consideration that those who would have represented either school, will as old students, be allowed to be on the same stage and compete in the short sprints, give an added attraction to the meeting. They will be featured in the Over 30, Over 40 and Over 50 races which are tailored to meet their individual needs while they will also gain medals and trophies for their efforts.
