On Friday night, spectators at the Georgetown Club were treated to another exciting evening at the Woodpecker Products Junio
r National Squash Tournament, with an especially thrilling bout between Beau Fernandes and Safirah Sumner that extended the usual 11-point game to 21.
They both came out on a mission and intended to make an early mark, and Fernandes executed some ace serves, deep in the back of the court. Sumner gained some excellent points with good drops and the two girls battled through reaching 10/10, 11/11, 12/12 all the way up to 19/19. The exhausted young ladies finally wrapped up the game with Fernandes killing the ball for a 20/19 lead and then a signature serve for the 21/19 well fought win.
Fernandes regrouped and dominated the next two games 11/5, 11/5 for a 3/0 triumph.
Christiana Fernandes, Kirsten Gomes and Teija Edwards all secured wins for the girls. Edwards won a though 5 setter against Angel Rahmin despite the challenge of returning Rahim’s strong serves, an improved Edwards held her own and at 9/9 in the 5th deciding game, took the last two for th
e win.
The boy’s matches were all won in 3 games. Louis DaSilva kept form defeating Chad DeAbreu and Shiloh Asreagdo sailed through a win with Matthew Spooner in the Under 13’s. Michael Alphonso conceded only 3 points each game in his match with Mohryan Baksh in the Under 15’s.
Shomari Wiltshire continued his clean sweep against Demetrius DeAbreu in a match which commenced at 16:30hrs, while Nicholas Verwey was given a walkover by Samuel
Ince-Carvalhal who suffered an injury to his right ankle.
The final was scheduled for last night with the presentation of National titles and details will be provided in tomorrow’s edition of the Kaieteur News.
