In a few days we will be celebrating our 53rd Independence anniversary. What do we have to joyfully boast about—to the world? Pain! Suffering! Heartache! Racial prejudice! Treasury looters! I am ashamed, we all should be. After Independence in 1966, the joy and excitement of taking control of our lives rapidly dissipated.
After 50 years of Independence, we continue on this charade of our backwardness of blaming outside forces. The rigged elections in 1968, (using overseas ballots), with the full support of the Johnson Administration quickly spiraled our nation into oblivion. We failed and we failed miserably. Is this a curse from the God we worship, or is it our own downright stupidity?
Let us look at our Religious sector (yes, it is a sector–it’s money making). The Christians (of all ethnic groups) worship the Savior of the world with pomp and glory. We sing lustily together, pray together, take Holy Communion together, gives tithes and offering together, embrace each other with the love of Jesus—then we go to the polls and vote along ethnic lines. No regard is placed on the message of unity and nation building. It is time for our own to be in political office. You get the picture? The Mandirs are filled with genuine worshippers. We pay homage to the Goddess of the Earth, the sun, the water, the air we breathe, pray for the blessings of our family and nation—then merrily go to the polls and vote for criminals who plundered our country’s resources as if there is no end—all I need is my race to be in power. In this holy month of Ramadhan, we fast dutifully, recite our prayers to perfection, gives zakat, stay up for the entire night of the “Night of Power”, praying to Almighty Allah to guide and bless our nation—then go to the polls and vote for vipers who steal and plunder our resources.
In the English language, the only word that truly describes us all–hypocrite. The question we need to consider now, “Will we continue to betray our country”? When will our Martin Luther King and our Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi rise up? When will we put the current leaders of our country to the dustbin (where they all belong)? When will our country be free indeed?
To my fellow Guyanese, it is time. Young people, you are more than half of our population—time to rise up. Put aside racial animosity and work hand in hand to create a new and dynamic Guyana for you and your children. It is not late. The pain of our country will tarry on through the night, BUT Joy comes in the morning. The night is almost over, let us take back our country.
Can we do it? Yes. We can.
Sincerely,
