Lincoln Lewis, a leader in the local trade union movement, has called for a revamping of the healthcare system, in anticipation of Guyana’s budding oil and gas sector.
Lewis said that all 10 administrative regions should have a main referral hospital, with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities, “including emergency facilities capable of dealing with severe injuries”.
Vital to the development of that sector, he said, is free dialysis services.
“We call for the establishment of free dialysis service delivered from a central point where all can access,” Lewis told government, after the May Day Parade, at the National Park.
Dialysis is a form of treatment for kidney failure that helps to rid the body of unwanted toxins, waste products and excess fluids by filtering the blood. When kidneys fail, the body may have difficulty cleaning the blood and keeping the system chemically balanced.
Provision of the service in Guyana is generally very expensive because it is to be taken regularly. The most affordable healthcare provider is the Doobay Medical and Research Centre. A single dialysis session is currently offered at $9000.
However, Dr. Budhendra Doobay had recently informed this publication that it is no longer feasible to offer the service at such a low cost. The difficult decision was made to hike the service to $12,000 per session.
It was only because Mr. Sattaur Gafoor of Gafoors – a hardware and manufacturing company – decided to cover the Centre’s shortfall, which will amount to some $2M per month.
But that will only last until December 2019, the end of the period Gafoor charitably opted to pay for the shortfall.
“I am appealing to all Guyanese to visit the Centre and see how you can help because we do not want to close our doors to patients; to our fellow Guyanese who are in need. Your help is critical for patients who cannot afford these treatments,” Doobay had said.
DMRC has been offering a subsidised service to patients for a number of years now, but Doobay is convinced that even more facilities are needed to fully meet the country’s dialysis needs.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
