Under their theme, ‘All For One, One For All’ and their four pillars of Education, Discipline, Respect and Teamwork, the Pele FC Alumni Third Annual Youth Development Programme concluded yesterday at the St. Joseph’s High School, successfully.
One hundred and seven students, drawn from school and football clubs as well as non football clubs were exposed to three days of interactive sessions apart from a tour to Banks DIH Thirst Park operations on Wednesday afternoon.
Directors of Pele Alumni, Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton and Dennis Ivor Carrington both expressed satisfaction at the level of engagement exhibited by the youths and their eagerness to learn and to relentlessly engage the various presenters through questions.
They stated that the three-days went by so quickly but they were more than delighted to once again be able to provide this level of exposure for the young people; many of whom are future leaders.
Both Barton and Carrington also noted that they were pleased with the standard of excellence achieved
by the participants as well as the growing level of parental engagement and involvement.
During eth programme, a total of six laptop computers were awarded to deserving children; a total of 32 prizes were presented spontaneously whilst the six recipients of laptop computers all received vouchers that would allow them to attend computer classes at computer world.
Each participant also received one branded polo shirt with the Pele emblem and a Pele pin; health band; one back pack each containing 42 items inclusive of school supplies and calculator.
They also each received a certificate of participation and a voucher valued at $3000 each to shop at Giftland. Transportation was also provided daily to assist the kids to get home safely.
A special presentation on Health and Wellness was facilitated by the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation (GAPLF) on Wednesday morning which saw national champions engaging in demonstrating the three lifts associated with the sport.
GAPLF Executive and Coach Martin Webster lectured on the importance of engaging in healthy lifestyles after which a very interactive session ensured, culminating in the participants being able to try the three lifts; also assisting was Mr. David Gomes, GAPLF Executive Member.
Among the national champions that participated were the World Championship bound Carlos Petterson, Junica Pluck and Nadina Taharally.
The three-day session concluded yesterday with Principal/Head Mistress of Carnegie School of Home Economics Ms. Myrna Lee doing a session on Social Etiquette which was preceded by Mr. Ed Caesar’s presentation on Conflict Resolution. Caesar is also President of the GAPLF.
Yesterday’s lunch was catered for by Carnegie School of Home Economics where the participants were able to practice what they were taught by Ms. Lee in terms of good table manners and the associated qualities of eating with the relevant cutlery.
On Wednesday, the Camex Group catered a healthy lunch for the participants in keeping with the topic, Health and Wellness. Ms. Dawn Brathwaite, Director of Training at Camex Restaurants was on hand to explain the need to eat healthy. She was also one of the presenters on day one when she dealt with Leadership Development.
The tour to Banks DIH saw the children take on guided tour of the soft drinks plant by Communications Manager Troy Peters who also shared the history of the company with the attentive students.
