Staged by the Petra Organisation, the fourth annual Corona Fustal Tournament, set to commence on May 4, should attract 24 Community based and Club teams and will be held at the National Gymnasium.
At a Press briefing yesterday at the Office of Top Brandz Distributors, Broad Street, the organisers updated the Media on this year’s competition disclosing that several club teams, including Camptown, Pele and Beacons, will compete with Ward teams for the $500,000 first prize while the runners-up receives $ 250,000. The third place finisher takes home $125,000 with the fourth placed team getting $75,000.
Troy Mendonca, Director of Petra Organisation, provided information about the five-week tournament which will see prizes of $30,000, $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively, in the Group stages for teams finishing first, second, third and fourth.
Also present yesterday were PRO Sean Embrack, Mark Alleyne from Petra Organisation and Colin Stuart, Brand Manager of Top Brandz Distributors. Stuart said Top Brandz was honored to be a part of this tournament and is always supportive of Sports.
He added that give-a-ways for fans will be done at all of the matches while all of the beverages distributed by Top Brandz, will on sale at very affordable prices. The competition, which will be played on a round-robin/knock-out basis will see 12 teams advancing from the elimination round of 24 teams.
The 12 teams will be divided into three groups of four that will compete in the round-robin segment with the final scheduled for June 8. A maximum of 10 players can register for a team and registration must be done on the form provided by the Petra Organisation, located at 67 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge (Guinness Bar) on or before Wednesday April 30.
The semi-finals are set for June 1 with the grand final on June 8. Five players (including a Goalkeeper) will constitute a team and four players must take the field for the game to be legitimate.
Matches will be played over 20 minutes with two 10-minute halves. However, in the elimination round and knock-out stage if teams are tied at the end of regulation time, an extra time of six minutes with three-minute halves being played.
If at the end of extra time the game is still tied, each team will have three penalty kicks and if the game is still tied, the sudden death rule will apply. The tournament kicks with the Elimination round on the opening night with six matches; Wolves United face Tucville (19:30hrs), Kingston battle North East La Penitence (20:15hrs), Leopold Street oppose Flamingo (21:00hrs), Back Circle come up against Camptown (21:45hrs), Sparta Boss plays Black Pearl (22:30hrs) and GT Panthers match skills with Bent Street (23:15hrs).
On May 7, six more eliminations will be played while the round-robin stage will be contested on May 11, 14 & 18 before the Quarter Finals are held on May 25. Admission up to the quarter-final stage is $500 while fans will be charged $1,000 to watch the semi-finals and final.
