A 40-year-old taxi driver was remanded to prison yesterday by Magistrate Renita Singh on a robbery under arms charge, when he appeared before her at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
Christopher Rampersaud of Lot 110 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was slapped with the charge which read that in the company of others on Saturday 16th March, 2019, at Bermine Scheme, New Amsterdam, and armed with a gun, he robbed Robin Busgith of one Toyota 192 valued at $1,000,000, one cellphone ($2000), G$3.7M, and US $1,500 – a total of $5,009,000.
He was remanded until August 23.
Initial reports stated that Robin Busgith and his wife had with them a bag containing the $4M worth in cash, along with the other items. As they were about to enter their Bermine Scheme premises, they were confronted by two persons armed with guns and dressed in school uniforms. The robbers demanded that they hand over all that was in their possession including the keys to Busgith’s car. After escaping with the loot in the couple’s car, they abandoned the vehicle at Number 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, where it was found.
The police recently nabbed Rampersaud in Linden after his co-accused in Berbice reportedly confessed that he (Rampersaud) was the mastermind behind the Canje robbery. It was during the time he was questioned, after he was caught in Linden then he reportedly admitted to being a part of a gang that committed several robberies in Berbice. Police continue to investigate those incidents.
