DEAR EDITOR,
An effective government needs effective political leadership. Once there are ministers who understand their roles, set clear priorities, work well with their departments, and cope with the demands of the job, there can never be so much deficiencies that is being shown by this Granger Government. The APNU/AFC coalition Government Ministers were unable to be effective in fulfilling their promises and bring resolution to numerous issues over the past four years despite various highlighted attempts by residents especially by picketing exercises throughout Guyana.
While there is a lack of leadership, appointment of “square pegs in round holes “ for important positions, refusal to be more transparent and accountable in projects, Ministers’ salary increase was one of the reasons that resulted in the APNU/AFC government loss of confidence by the people of Guyana.
The announcement by the APNU/AFC coalition government to be in Region Six to address issues is a clear sign of desperation an a continuation of the 2015 elections campaign of unfulfilled promises to Berbician in order to garner votes for the next elections.
As Berbicians we need to ask ourselves what has this coalition Government done for Berbice over the past four years without benefitting themselves. Berbice was quickly transformed into a state of depression after May 2015 , and in the most shameless method this coalition “Circus” hiding under, ‘Bringing the Government to you’, is nothing else but wastefully abuse of taxpayers monies by public officials while Guyanese are suffering in Region Six.
This exclusive clique of elite rulers, the Granger regime, is a secretive, corrupt, unaccountable, dictatorial and non-transparent that is enjoying the good life, while other Guyanese are suffering because of the inhuman policies of the APNU/AFC coalition Government. There are numerous issues that are known to the Government but continued to disregard them for example:
– the increase of over 200 new taxes
– increase of tariffs by the Guyana Water Inc despite poor quality of water and services
– the poor performance of GPL
– refusal to reinstate students cash grant, but install overcrowded school buses with no insurances in case of accidents
– East Bank Berbice public road project using as a political milking cow to benefit Ministers and APNU/AFC activists
– secrecy in awarding contracts by central government ministries, contracts documents being kept secret from regional authorities.
– millions unaccountable at the Indian Monument Site Palmyra
– streetlights not maintain in the region
– only some areas playgrounds are being fixed
– three excavators in one areas while rice farmers are suffering
– no job creation for over 6000 workers in the region such as the severed sugar workers, construction workers, laid off workers from affected businesses etc.
– increases in fees for passports, drivers license, gun licenses etc.
– increased land rental for farmers in the region
– crime rate on the increase
– streets, roads need urgent upgrade
– remove VAT from GWI GTT and GPL bills
Government must be open because an open Government allows the doctrine that citizens have the absolute right to access the documents and proceedings of government so that ordinary Guyanese can exercise oversight. The APNU/AFC coalition Government has changed our country to secrecy, oppression, intimidation and threats while the epidemic of systemic corruption in Guyana ensures that monies is being siphoned off into the pockets of public officials. Granger has not been able to do anything to make Guyanese lives better.
Regards
Zamal Hussain
