A 1-0 score-line was enough for Silver Shattas to end the hopes of Coomacka, while penalty kicks allowed Topp XX to oust Milerock’s B side 4-2 after a 2-2 open play score as action in the Linden Town Week, Mayor’s Cup, football competition continued on Friday night at the Mackenzie sports Club ground.
The opening game of the evening began well for Silver Shattas as they stole the lead from a free kick awarded after a foul was penalized outside the 18 yard box area. Dexter Garraway then stepped up and shot past the Coomacka wall to score and that 1-0 advantage would eventually be the final score. Coomacka did mount several challenges and looked like gaining the equalizer in the second half but sturdy defending by the Shattas would see them earn a slim victory.
But the second game would be a see-saw affair between Milerock B team and Topp XX.
It would be Topp XX who gained the lead through Ryan Noel in the 10th minute, but that would be matched through a 21st minute goal of the boot of Lennox Richards only to see it swing back in Topp XX’s favour through a goal two minutes before lemon time by Chaka Hall.
After play resumed that 2-1 lead by Topp XX, however, would last until the 59thminute of play in the second half when Tyrese Lewis would tie the scores for Milerock.
This would stay knotted after 90 minutes and overtime play could not see a separation of the two teams and penalty kicks were ordered where Topp XX would edge out their opponents 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals where tonight they face Upper Demerara champions Christianburg Eagles United and the other game is between Capital FC and Botafago.
