An aggressive half century by the powerfully built Besham Dahasrat could not prevent Aurora Knight Riders from recording an emphatic 7 wicket victory over Crown 11 when play in the South Essequibo T/20 cricket competition continued last Sunday at the Affiance Cricket Ground.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike in scorching heat, Crown 11 quickly found themselves with an early setback when opener Ramlochan Nankishore was taken at long on off spinner Deoraj Dindyal for 3. Dindyal struck again when he induced Anil Persaud (12) to an easy return catch in the 4th over.
Shanon Jagmohan (26) and Dahasrat then tried to repair the innings with a commanding 67 runs third wicket partnership with Dahasrat in particular quick to jump on anything short or full. When Jagmohan was bowled by left arm spinner Garfield Phillips in the 11th over, Ramsingh Taijbally and Dahasrat continued to play maturely with Taijbally playing the anchor role. However, when Dahasrat was run out by skipper Saieef Ally for his entertaining 66 which included 5 fours and 6 maximums, the run rate quickly declined as Crown 11 found themselves at 131-5 off their allotted overs.
Bowling for the Knight Riders, Dindyal grabbed 2-21, Phillips 1-32, while rising teenage sensation Imtiaaz Ally had 1-20.
Needing 132 for their third consecutive victory in the competition, the Knight Riders’ openers started their reply aggressively with the right handed Mohamed Timur Gafoor neatly caressing pacer Ramlochan Nankishore for three consecutive boundaries in the first over, much to the appreciation of the vocal fans in the stands. Ramsingh Taijbally who operated from the southern end had Deoraj Dindyal comprehensively beaten and bowled for 4 at 25-1. Ravi Beharry batting at number 3 hammered a quick fire 16 off 8 deliveries before he was unlucky to be given out LBW to Nankishore with the ball clearly kissing the bat unto his pads.
The level headed Garfield Phillips and Gafoor then teamed up and continued to bat positively until Gafoor (34) was brilliantly caught by Nankishore running back from long on off the impressive Taijbally. Anand Manniram and Phillips then guided the Knight Riders to victory with 4.3 overs to spare. Phillips was left hanging on 36, while Manniram was unbeated on 27. Taijbally was the pick of the bowlers with 2-37, while Nankishore claimed 1-28.
