Police are to address the issue of bullying of elderly drivers by their younger colleagues, particularly on the Stabroek, Georgetown short drop car parks. This is according to Traffic Chief, Superintendent, Linden Isles.
Police have already implemented an ‘order in line’ system to ensure order is sustained to ensure each driver gets a fair turn at soliciting passengers. However the younger drivers have been allegedly disregarding this system, thus intentionally cheating the older drivers out of their rightful turns to load their vehicles.
Older drivers are very angry at this situation, noting that they depend on their trade for a daily bread, some of them citing that the actions of the younger drivers continue to ‘put a dent in their pockets’.
Lancelot Barker, an elderly driver, was quite ready to voice his protest, with hope that the police can intervene into the matter.
“I have been working at this park for almost ten years now and have never experienced (anything) like this since these young drivers arrived here. They have now invaded our car parks and using their ‘shine cars’ to every advantage.
They do not wait their turns and they deliberately ignore the turn system the police have put in place. Sometimes they even bully passengers attempting to enter our cars, enticing them with options of choosing their shiny cars against our older models… We have to eat and survive just like them too.”
Some elderly drivers plying the Stabroek to Ramp Road locations revealed that sometimes they have to wait for lengthy periods to make one load, during which time the younger drivers would have made sometimes three or four return trips, by bullying tactics
Fifty-six-year-old Mootilall Ramroop shared similar sentiments, noting that any attempts to reprimand the younger drivers would often result in ‘steamy cuss outs’ most of it fuelled and executed by their younger colleagues.
“Dese young drivers really going on reckless. Dem ain’t waiting dem turn, and sometime when yuh catch yuhself dem done full four, five times before we even get de first load. Dis ain’t fair…And yuh can’t tell them nutting…
“De minute yuh open yuh mouth dem ready fuh yuh. De authorities should really get some police ranks on the car parks to see how ole people suffering. De police can’t just pay attention to the minibus drivers alone. We car drivers gat problems tuh.”
In times gone by, mostly elderly drivers were plying the Stabroek/Ramp Road route, but lately several very young drivers have began using much more attractive vehicles to operate along the same route. That coupled with their reportedly arrogant attitude have put the older drivers in a very uncomfortable situation apparently.
The elderly drivers are calling on their younger associates to exercise discipline by complying with the ‘turn system’. It should be adhered to thus ensuring order is restored to the Stabroek car park.
