Competitive basketball returns to the Burnham Hard Court on Middle and Carmichael Streets tonight when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) hosts its first tournament of 2019 with
support from the Guyana Lottery Company’s sports betting division; Let’s Bet Sports.
GABA is sponsoring the six-team Under-23 division knockout while Let’s Bet Sports is the title sponsor of the First and Second Divisions. The U-23 Division which begins tonight will conclude on Sunday evening.
This evening’s fixtures will pit Pepsi Sonics against University of Guyana (UG) Trojans in the first match at 18:30hrs while Pepsi Sonics will play University of Guyana (U.G.) Trojans in the feature first division clash at 20:30hrs.
Tomorrow, Pacesetters will play the winners of tonight’s first match at 18:30hrs while Plaisance Guardians’ opponents for the feature match is yet to be announced but that match will tip off at 20:30hrs.
For the 2nd division, it will be a five-team single elimination with Sonics and Vikings trashing it out for a stake in the final four which already has Guardians, Pacesetters and Eagles already in the semi-final stage.
Their leg of the tournament starts on March 19 alongside the first division and will run for seven days. However, the most senior division will see eight teams trashing it out for top honours. According to head of the GABA, Adrian Hooper, the top teams in the first and second divisions are set to receive lucrative cash prizes, something that has not been possible in the past years.
