One of two brothers initially charged with murdering a businessman on the Corentyne back in 2013 is on trial for the crime in the Berbice High Court.

indra Deodat, 34, called ‘Dave’, a businessman of Lot 72 Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne on October 7, 2013.
Deodat, the owner of Cool Runnings Trucking Service, was chopped and shot dead at around 18:30 hrs at his home after a group of masked men stormed the grocery shop which he and his wife, Mala, 29, operated.
The bandits also chopped Deodat’s wife in the head and shot his father in law, Rafeek Abdul.
Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan is representing the accused while attorney at law Mondel Moore is the State Prosecutor.
When the trial began the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.
Attorney Moore after addressing the jury and reading the opening statement called two witnesses.
Police Detective Constable Beharry Jaigopaul took the stand and told the court that he witnessed the post mortem examination.
He was subsequently cross examined by attorney at law Sohan.
The brother in law of the accused, Sham, also took the witness stand and informed that he identified the body during the postmortem examination.
The post- mortem examination performed by Doctor Vivekanand Brijmohan on Deodat’s body at the New Amsterdam Hospital gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot wounds.
The accused younger brother, Neshan Jagmohan, who was also charged with him for the crime reportedly died on June 21, 2017, following a brawl at the New Amsterdam Prison.
The matter is continuing.
