On the 21 December 2018, a vote of no confidence ravaged the Granger Administration. It seems to have caught the government by surprise. I analyzed the situation and deduced that the root cause of their demise was a lack of real reform which they promised in their manifesto.
In my opinion Guyana is way ahead of other Caricom countries in creating a multi-party democracy. Guyana is the only Caricom country with proportional representation in parliament, which makes it easier for a third or fourth party to win seats in the National Assembly.
Despite this, the Guyana economy has not been providing adequately for most Guyanese. Guyana has a Pareto distribution, where 80% of the nation’s wealth belongs to 20% of its people and a large number of Guyanese live below the poverty line. The people voted this present coalition government to reform the constitution in order to create a more just society. It appears that the present government made the promise of reform in order to win, but never intended to implement it. This made them politically vulnerable and diminished their political capital.
The opposition saw their vulnerability and capitalized on that and won the vote of no confidence – whether financial inducement was used is unprovable.
The next government take heed: improve governance, thus improve the standard of living of Guyanese, or your future is uncertain.
Yours truly,
Brian E Plummer
