Permit me space to voice my disagreement with several commentators, on social media and discussion forums, who consistently peddle the ill-conceived idea that Dr. Jagdeo is obsessed with power and wants to get his hands on the oil money. The reality is that such assertions bear no truth. In fact, his only obsession at this time revolves around two themes: putting back the PPP/C in power, and bringing back economic prosperity to Guyana.
With regards to the first, Dr. Jagdeo has stated time and again that he made it his mission to reconnect his party to supporters and the general populace. He has made it clear since 2014 that the party can no longer sit back in Georgetown and connect with people in villages and rural areas of the country. He has since been pushing the members of the upper echelons as well as other party officials to go to the people. In the wake of the successful no-confidence motion, Dr. Jagdeo has reintroduced another dimension to his reconnection theme, i.e., the concept of inclusiveness.
The PPP/C has now embarked on garnering and galvanizing greater support from a wider cross-section of the populace, i.e., across the spectrum of ethnic, religious, gender and other social groupings, with emphasis on youth involvement and opportunities.
As to the second theme, there can be no doubt that Guyanese enjoyed the greatest socioeconomic success and social cohesion during the two eras under the PPP lead governments, i.e., prior to 1964 and 1992-2015, and the records are there as evidence.
Dr. Jagdeo is therefore very concerned about the economic slide Guyanese have experienced in the last three years. In fact, the deep concern was driven by the failure of APNU+AFC’s government:
(1) to properly account for oil/gas money received;
(2) their attempt to squander the oil advance;
(3) their mismanagement of the economy and bad policies that saw the loss of over 30,000 jobs;
(4) their lack of support for the rice industry;
(5) their shutting down the housing drive (until the last few weeks’ frantic elections/political gimmicks);
(6) their shutting down the logging & sawmilling industry;
(7) their use of revenue-garnering institutions to squeeze out taxes from declining businesses affected by bad gov’t policies; and
(8) their sitting back and waiting for oil revenues to boost the economy.
Clearly, Dr. Jagdeo, who had put Guyana on the path to sustainable prosperity, is concerned that the APNU + AFC government has no proper plans for advancing the nation; no proper plans for utilizing the windfall oil revenues for national development.
Yes, he is concerned that they may go frolicking on beaches with windfall oil revenues and allow Guyana to join the increasing number of failed oil economies.
Yours sincerely,
Ronald Singh
