I am so utterly upset at the glaring display of disrespect, disdain, and utter contempt by Rusal for our people, and by extension, government, I literally want to throw up. Where else in the world would these people be allowed to get away with their despicable display of contempt? No respected government anywhere would allow them to do what they are getting away with impunity.
Sooner rather than later, concerned citizens must demand to know who is minding the store, who is in charge here? Is it the Government or are Guyanese now subject to the laws of Russia? To allow this situation to continue is an utter and total embarrassment to us and our country. Why have these people been allowed to put their foot up the behinds of our workers for so long? Both the previous PPP and present APNU administrations turned a blind eye to the glaring, lawless travesty of this enterprise?
A columnist of the Kaieteur News rightly recalled what transpired at the former McKenzie bauxite operations under the control of the Canadians. Having resided at Linden during those days of ignominy, I can attest to the accuracy of this shameful history when the only ones going in and out of Watooka were maids and yard people, Guyanese could not even think of taking a dip in the swimming pool.
Those locals in the staff club were serving drinks to the expatriates. Former Presidents Jagan and Burnham put a screeching halt to that foolishness. Despite all of their shortcomings Guyana needs that kind of transformative, proactive leadership like yesterday. Politicians across the board and just about everywhere still follow the same old tired script, which, prior to needing the vote of the people, they show up with a cart full of promises only to suffer major dementia once in office.
Guyana is no different; Ministers and those seekers of high office are miraculously available and can be seen just about everywhere making those empty promises. Well the workers need your help NOW, in putting Rusal in their place. As reported in this paper, they are so emboldened by the silence of the Government they have now fired 61 of the striking workers.
Enough is enough already! Politicians across the board MUST resurrect and dust off the Jagan and Burnham playbook and put these hoodlums under manners. On the flip side of this exercise steeped in national pride, citizens of Guyana must take time out to support these workers, show up in your numbers at Rusal’s headquarters and register your disdain for them.
I mentioned in a recent letter, the example of Long Island City New York residents driving out Amazon from setting up shop in their community, despite the fact that Amazon would have brought over 2500 jobs to a community in need of those jobs. Grow a backbone Guyanese; grow a backbone for you and your country
Respectfully,
Claudeston G. Massiah
