Dear Editor,
As is my daily custom I’ve been up just after 4am filling up on K. News. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, one of the finest newspapers in Guyana and the Caribbean bar none.
After reading the statement made by Dr. Vincent Adams about his stance over not issuing a permit to the Exxon Mobil’s subsidiary Esso and Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) until they can produce evidence to address and contain any future oil spills, (that is always a possibility in this industry, my words) I was heartened by this statement and would only hope that finally a Guyanese is growing enough backbone to hold these foreign companies’ feet to the proverbial fire by demanding that they adhere to industry best practices.
And just as important, respect our laws and by extension our citizens employed by them to extract OUR resources. I would like to believe there is still time remaining to ensure that ExxonMobil is not allowed to become another Rusal. This Russian Company is “off the chain”, according to young people when it comes to blatantly disrespecting our Government our constitution/ laws and by extension our people as a whole not just their Guyanese workers.
Can anyone envisage any company North American, British or from any part of the world, doing what these (thugs) are doing to our people with impunity in Putin’s Russia? Not while that midget dictator is in charge, I dare say!
So the question is, notwithstanding the fact that we do not have a dictatorship here,” Why are we allowing them to get away with their exploitation and blatant disrespect of our people?”
The country is in very troubling times as a result of the NCM and other concerns, a perfect opportunity for exploitation by heartless disrespectful MORANS like Rusal. This must stop and only Guyanese can bring this to an end.
We have displayed a timid subservient attitude to this and other foreign companies for way too long. I’ve lived in America for nearly 40 years worked in the U.S Civil Service, private industry and finally with an Agency licenced to the NYC Child Protection Services. I can vouch for what I’m about to state.
These people, North Americans, Europeans and others view peoples of color (Brown and Black) for the most part as lesser that. Allow me to qualify that statement by saying, that this is not the case across the board. Fortunately they are not all like that, just too many.
This mind set accompanies them when they are in countries such as ours. They look down on so called third world peoples where their major focus is to make more money than God, fill up on our liquor and exploit our females.
Despite our trying times, constitutionally, the government of the day and future governments MUST put a stop to this glaring disrespect and violation of our Laws, labor and others these investors MUST know that we will, as a country, respect their rights to invest with an eye to profits but not at the expense of our peoples rights and privileges as citizens of Guyana.
Could foreign workers in America pull guns on security personnel doing their jobs? This has happened on our shores! It is my hope that despite our immediate concerns our administration will firmly stand on the side of the Rusal workers and those in other industries.
I call on Guyanese from all walks of life to SUPPORT these workers and send a clear message that we will not allow you to come into our country and do as you damn well please without paying a price.
Amazon learned that lesson in L.I.C New York just recently. Stand UP! GET UP GUYANESE! You know the song.
Respectfully
Claudeston G. Massiah
