The Bounty Farm Handicap Squash tournament at the Georgetown Club entered its fourth night and included hard fought matches between number one seed Alex Arjune (-16) who defeated former Junior Caribbean champion Damian DaSilva 15-9, 15-4 and 26-year-old Ashley Khalil who lost to Regan Pollard (-8)15-12, 15-14.
In category ‘A’, Kirsten Gomes (-4) and much improved Lucas Jonas (-3) produced an epic match before Gomes won 15/12, 15/4. 15/11, while Nicholas Verwey (-8) beat Demetrius DeAbreu (-4) 15/10, 15/5.
Arjune, who had to score 31 points to beat DaSilva, began with nice rallies and matched the extremely fit looking Arjune shot for shot in the opening game to score nine points as the left-handed pair played high intensity Squash.
However, in the second game DaSilva ran out of gas due to the long rallies and the fact that more points are scored than in games without Handicaps.
The exhausted DaSilva did not even try the reach the ball when Arjune played three consecutive clinical drops shots and must have been as relieved as he was disappointed when Arjune won match point to end the gruelling battle.
Regan Pollard (-14) once again showed his expertise against fighter Ashley Khalil (-0). Both players showed excellent retrieval skills as they battled through long rallies. Khalil almost took the second game but succumbed 15/14, with Pollard finishing off 15/12, 15/14.
Khalil, who captured Guyana’s lone medal in this year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) games in the doubles squash event last year in Colombia when she teamed up with Taylor Fernandes, played with plenty of energy but many times gifted Pollard easy points which she should have won.
The match was entertaining and punctuated with long rallies but Khalil paid the ultimate price for a slew of unforced errors to lose the contest.
In the Gomes against Jonas scrap, each point was well earned as Jonas dominated the T, while Gomes used her athletic prowess to cover the remainder of the court to retrieve his precise straight drives and deep cross courts. After impressive rallies, Gomes closed out the three game match in a close third game to win 15/12, 15/4. 15/11.
In the Open Plate Wayne Alphonso (11) and Tony Farnum (10) entertained a good size gathering with a spirited performance. Farnum took an early lead in the first game but Alphonso ran each ball down to earn his share of points.
The 65-year-old Farnum held on to take the game 15/11. The second game was full of thrills, close calls and good shots and reached a close climax of 14 all before Farnum finished the match in two straight games; 15/11, 15 14.
The semi-finals were scheduled for yesterday, while the finals are set for today.
