A businessman who is accused of stabbing another man several times about his body was yesterday charged and released on $400,000 bail on an attempted murder charge.
Thirty-one-year-old Brenton Charles, of Moruca, North West District, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on January 23, last, at Kamaka Market Area, in the Essequibo Magisterial District, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Kenrick Henry.
Charles appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Marcus-Isaacs in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Trenton Lake who in a successful bail application told the court that at the time of the incident, his client was merely acting in self-defence.
The lawyer added that on the day of the incident, his client was at his business place when he was confronted by the victim who began to use abusive language towards him.
Lake told the court that his client went into his shop for his safety and stayed there until the victim left the compound.
He added that his client then ventured outside to remove a piece of cloth that the victim had placed on a camera that is situated at the side of the business place.
The court heard while Charles was in the process of removing the piece of cloth, he was once again confronted by the victim who by then was armed with an object and dealt him several cuffs and kicks about his body.
The lawyer argued that his client in an attempt to defend himself, pulled out an object from his pants pocket and dealt the victim several stabs about his body.
The lawyer went on to tell the court that even after the victim would have received several stabs about his body, he still managed to attack his client, which caused his client to run to the Station for safety.
However, Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss, in addressing the court, stated that on the day in question, the two had an altercation and the businessman became annoyed and dealt the victim several stabs about his body with an object.
The Prosecutor added that the CCTV footage obtained from the businessman’s shop showed the defendant being the aggressor. He said that the defendant was on top of the victim inflicting the stab wounds.
The victim was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Hospital where he was admitted.
Prosecutor Inniss made serious objections to bail being granted to the defendant citing that the victim’s injuries are life threatening. She added based on the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts if bail is granted to the defendant, he might not return to court for the trial.
The Magistrate after listening to both sides released Charles on $400,000 bail.
Condition of the bail is that he reports every Friday to the Aquaro Police Station until the hearing and determination of the trial. He was also instructed to stay 100 feet away from the victim.
The businessman is expected to make his next court appearance on January 31 for statements.
