The Windwards Volcanoes were 167-3 in their second innings against the Guyana Jaguars after 20-year-old Kemo Paul’s 6-57 allowed Leon Johnson to enforce the follow-on on the penultimate
day of the Regional First-Class encounter at Providence yesterday.
The Islanders, in their second innings were 167-3, still needing 78 to avoid an innings defeat with seven wickets in hand with Skipper Kirk Edwards unbeaten on 40 from 73 balls, 83 minutes with six fours and Kaveem Hodge at the crease.
The 37-year-old Devon Smith scored his 59th half century at this level from 128 balls, 160 minutes with eight boundaries and added 75 with Roland Cato who scored 36.
The Volcanoes replying to the Jaguars’ 454-9 declared, fell for 209 after starting the day on 99-5.
The 20-year-old Dominican Alick Athanaze faced 114 balls, batted 162 minutes and reached the boundary 11 times and cleared it once in his 66 to register his second fifty in his fourth game at this level.
But only Denis Smith with 37 from 93 balls, 107 minutes with six fours and pacer Ray Jordon with an unbeaten 18 reached double figures yesterday.
Paul with two Tests and 11 ODIs to his name finished with another six wicket haul and with already one of the wickets to fall in the Volcanoes’ second innings, on target to better his best match figures of 9-68.
The Essequibian got support from Romario Shepherd (2-47) and left-arm-spinner and the tournaments leading wicket-taker Veerasammy Permaul who had 2-38.
Volcanoes began the day needing 205 more runs to avoid the follow-on and Athanaze started with a flurry of boundaries in hazy sunshine.
The Dominican left-hander Athanaze slapped Paul for two boundaries before hitting Permaul for a couple of fours, while Denis Smith got an inside edge past to Keeper for four as five boundaries were scored in the first six overs of the day.
Athaneze soon reached his second fifty in his fourth match which was decorated with nine fours and a six and came from 96 minutes and 81 balls.
Smith edged Clinton Pestano just short of Johnson at slip for four before edging him for another boundary to third man but their 90-run partnership was broken by the lively Shepherd when the Grenadian Smith (37), the nephew of Devon, was taken at first slip by Johnson at 171-6.
Larry Edwards (1) was stupendously caught and bowled by Paul on his follow through at 178-7 before Athanaze edged Shepherd to Keeper Anthony Bramble at 186-8.
Shermon Lewis (4) was bowled by Paul without addition to the score before Permaul trapped Josh Thomas (4) LBW at 209 to leave Jordon unbeaten on 18 and Volcanoes 245 runs adrift of the Jaguars’ total.
After lunch, which extended and taken at the end of the Volcanoes first innings, Volcanoes following-on in their second innings, lost Taryck Gabriel caught behind for 16 off Sherfane Rutherford at 35-1.
Roland Cato joined the experienced Devon Smith playing in his 203rd First-Class game and the pair saw the 50 posted in the 21st over and by Tea the Volcanoes were 62-1 with Smith on 37.
After Tea, Smith continued to play several delightful shots and along with Cato batted for just over an hour as the pair showed fight.
Smith, with 35 centuries to name, soon reached his fifty from 104 balls, 118 minutes with eight boundaries before Cato was caught behind off Paul at 110-2.
When on 65 with the score on 138-3, Smith seemed very unfortunate to be given out caught behind when his bat hit the ground as Bramble effected his 16th dismissal, the most by any Keeper in the tournament.
Kaveem Hodge (3) and skipper Edwards (40) were together at the end of the day.
Today is the final day and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
