– Calls on politicians not to fuel instability during this “critical” time
By Abena Rockcliffe-Campbell
Guyana is now in the middle of a critical period where things can easily go wrong. Knowing this, all politicians must now put aside their differences and do what is best for the nation—move forward. That is the plea of prominent Attorney-at-law, Sanjeev Datadin.
Datadin said this to Kaieteur News as he highlighted the Coalition Government’s public statements to the effect that it is examining its “options” in the wake of the No-Confidence Motion that was recently passed against it in the National Assembly. Datadin said that the Constitution outlines clearly what should happen if a No-Confidence Motion is successful against a government—it shall resign, and election must be held within three months.
Datadin said that it could be of no help to Guyana that the Government is trying to find another way out. “No society can advance that way. I said the same thing at the end of the last elections (2015 General and Regional Elections) when the PPP (People’s Progressive Party) was of the view that elections were rigged and they wanted to file legal proceedings.”
Datadin said that back then, he voiced his opinion that what PPP was doing could have never been in the best interest of Guyana.
“Anybody living in Guyana at that time would have known that there was a movement in the country for change and you would have seen that there was no rigging but they had this view that was fuelled by emotions. And, their supporters were desperate at the time; when people are desperate you get them to do these things, and now the government is doing the same thing to its people. We have to mature as a people.”
Datadin said that the government should desist from fuelling allegations that Charrandass Persaud took money to vote the way he did.
“They say he took money from some oil tycoon. That is a vague generalization to capture the imagination of people because people will believe that yes there is an oil tycoon who did this. All they are doing is working on people’s imagination. They haven’t said anything that is concrete,” said Datadin.
“I noticed in the media yesterday that the Crime Chief said that he has received no report and no information that he is to expect a report. So clearly, there is no evidence. With all the information that the government alleges it has, they have done nothing with it and they haven’t reported it to the authorities, just vague generalizations.
Datadin said that it matters not what led Persaud to vote the way he did, “all that matters is that he voted and now, based on Article 165 of our Constitution, elections must be held.”
Datadin said that many Guyanese are desperate for some sort of a solution and hope. He said that politicians must now be careful not to sell false hope.
“The same is true of this thing of the majority being 34. It is utterly incorrect and without foundation. People keep introducing phrases and words like absolute majority. If you read the constitution you will see that there is no word before majority.”
Datadin said that the fact is, “the government did not take the motion seriously, they brushed it aside as if it was irrelevant and what happen is now the supporters are very concerned and they want to hold on. The supporters are looking for any straw to clutch on to say that ‘we have a chance.”
“These ridiculous things are being fed by leaders and persons with public profiles to give them false hope. We need to mature as a country to understand that when things happen, you have to accept it and move on. It is not every single thing that happens you have to question. No society can advance that way. I told this to the PPP and I am now telling this to the Coalition.”
