Two women were killed around 16.45 hrs yesterday after they were struck by a speeding driver while standing on the parapet near Marudi, on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Police identified the victims as Melva Lucas, 54, and Elsa Fernandes, 51, both of Grant Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.
The driver is a 28-year-old of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway resident.
According to a release, the driver, who was heading north at a fast rate in motor vehicle PRR 3606, claimed that he swerved to avoid a collision with another car.
He then lost control and struck a wooden bus shed on the western parapet, before hitting Lucas and Fernandes, who were standing on the parapet.
They were rushed to the Diamond Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver who passed a breathalyzer test is in custody.
