Victoria Kings, despite being reduced to 10-players after Kwadjo Garnett drew his second yellow card on the stroke of full time after being booked first in the 61st minute, still rallied to defeat Buxton Stars in the all East Coast derby when the Guyana Football Federation / Stag Super 16 continued on Saturday night last at the Golden Grove Ground, East Coast Demerara.
The other match on the night saw another East Coast team, Ann’s Grove, prevailing over East Bank’s Soesdyke Falcons; both matches were originally set for Friday night but owing to the late arrival of lights, had to be rescheduled for Saturday night.
There was going to be no lack of getting it right on Saturday night and this allowed the teams to finally get down to business on the pitch. Victoria Kings, on account of a second half brace from Quincy holder in the 52nd and 54th minutes erased a one goal advantage that Buxton Stars had established in the first half when Eon Abel slotted home in the 42nd minute.
The job was already done for the Kings, once regarded as the best knockout team in Guyana when Garnett was booked for a second time.
The Kings have now earned a date with the winner of the Den Amstel / Santos clash which was played last evening. They will face off on Boxing Day in the first match of a double header.
Saturday’s first match saw Ann’s Grove making light work of Soesdyke Falcons to win 3-0, thanks to strikes from Phillip Williams in the 16th minute, Quincy Barry in the 53rd and Ryan Sears in the 63rd.
Ann’s Grove will now contest the first quarter final match on Christmas Day against Western Tigers at the Golden Grove Ground from 18:30hrs.
Last evening would have seen the completion of the round of 16 at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora; Milerock faced Eagles and Den Amstel played Santos.
