The Alliance For Change (AFC) yesterday said that it is “shocked and betrayed” by the vote of Charrandass Persaud in the National Assembly.
The party claimed Persaud never expressed that he had lost confidence in the APNU+AFC Coalition Government.
According to AFC, to the contrary, Persaud committed, on more than one occasion that he will vote resoundingly against the motion.
Further, AFC recalled that just two weeks ago, Persaud voted in favour of Budget 2019 and the Coalition Government’s plans for development and progress.
AFC said that it regrets the dissenting vote of Persaud and sought to assure all Guyanese that at no time did the party have any indication whatsoever, either from Persaud or otherwise, that he would vote in any way other than firmly against the motion.
The AFC acknowledged that “this unforeseen development would have come as a shock to many Guyanese in Guyana and the Diaspora” and that persons “would be distraught and hurt by it.”
AFC said that the Disciplinary Committee has met and expelled Persaud and the party has initiated the process of his recall as a Member of Parliament.
Pursuant to the constitutional requirement for elections, the party has begun to plan, prepare and mobilize.
Also, AFC revealed that it held an internal executive meeting yesterday and will soon engage its supporters and coalition partner, A Patnership for National Unity (APNU).
The AFC reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and said that in this season, peace and goodwill will prevail.
In a shocking move, Persaud voted ‘yes’ allowing the opposition to secure 33 votes in favour of the motion.
With this new development, General Elections are constitutionally due within 90 days. Prime Minister Nagamootoo told the media that until that time, the Government remains in office.
However, he was keen to call on Guyanese to respect the outcome of the motion, and to conduct their business as usual.
The no-confidence motion was filed by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo in November.
