Yesterday at the Ministry of Education (MoE) ground, the top teams of the recently concluded Turbo knockout football tournament were presented with their trophies and more importantly, prize monies.
Northern Rangers’ most senior player, Nigel Denny, received the cheque and championship trophy on behalf of his team during the simple ceremony while the Coach of the runners up, Dellon Cadogan, collected the cheque worth $400,000 and corresponding trophy on behalf of Georgetown Football Club (GFC).
Skipper of Rangers, 18-year-old Stephan Reynolds, was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament after an outstanding campaign and a man-of-the-match performance in the final where he scored the winning goal to see the underdogs carting off the grand cash prize of $800,000.
Interestingly, GFC’s Ronel McClean, who was beaten on his near post by Reynolds in the final, was named the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament. Manaseh Primo of Police FC which was disqualified in the quarterfinals, tally of five goals was the most in the tournament and it is very likely that he would have added to the tally if Police had remained in the tournament.
Sean Embrack, a representative of the promoters; Petra Organisation noted that twelve teams participated in the knockout format over a period of eight playing days and he was pleased to see a new winner emerging in the second edition after Camptown FC had won the inaugural.
Marketing Coordinator of title sponsors, Guyana Beverage Inc. through their Turbo Brand, Raymond Govinda also expressed his pleasure with the execution of the tournament while acknowledging the tremendous support of the fans.
However, he explained that they will not be a third edition of the Turbo sponsored event since his company has plans to take the brand to motor racing but noted that he GBI will continue to support Petra but through another brand.
