The Administration of Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) has blasted the Department of Education of that region for the tardiness in treatment of the two teams from the Region that
participated in the just concluded National Schools’ Athletics, Swimming and Cycling Championship, those teams being District Six (Corentyne) and District 15 (New Amsterdam/Canje).
The administration in a release noted that the entire preparation and handling of the teams (students, teachers) was nothing less than awful and students and teachers alike complained bitterly about the way they were treated.
Leading the broadside was Regional Vice-Chairman Dennis DeRoop. He said that, “The Department of Education of Region 6 owes the Regional Administration and the people of East Berbice an apology for embarrassing us to that extent.”
He mentioned that neither teams participated in the opening ceremony including the march past, which is an important part of the activity. This was a disgrace. “From reports the teams were not outfitted with uniforms. It was so embarrassing; the activity was being live stream, where was Region six?” he asked.
Other issues mentioned was the food not being properly prepared and reports that the chicken and other staples were spoil.
DeRoop lamented that, “The entire Championship was observing a minute of silence for an athlete of Region 6- (the female cycling champion from Corentyne that died earlier in the year), and both teams from Region 6 were absent. It was an embarrassment. Your athlete died and there’s a minute of silence for her and both of your districts are absent. It was shameful.”
The Vice-Chairman called for a full investigation into the entire scenario and the report presented to the administration for discussion with the aim of avoiding such an incident in the future. (Samuel Whyte)
