Even though it was a low scoring affair, the inaugural East Coast Cricket Committee (ECCC) Banks Beer 100-ball tournament which climaxed on Sunday last, was deemed a success by the organisers.
Lusignan A were brilliant in every department as they defeated Enmore A by eight wickets in the final in front of a fair-sized crowd at the Enmore Community Centre ground. Enmore A looked apart from the team that played in the preliminary round and on a slow pitch which didn’t render much assistance to the spinners, the scores were expected to be fairly higher, but Lusignan A bowlers maintained a steady line to restrict the home team for 108-6 off their 100 balls after they decided to bat.
Bhemraj Ramkelawan and Imran Hassan added 38 for the opening stand before Kumar Bishundial provided the visitors with the breakthrough by uprooting the stumps of Hassan for 17. Amir Khan was soon taken off Rajpaul Gopaul for 14 before Rudolph Singh (00) and Ramkelawan, who made 26 with two fours, were removed by Gopaul and Jason Heyliger respectively as Enmore A were reduced to 59-4.
Vishwanauth Ramlakhan propped up the total somewhat with a top score of 27 which included two fours, while Yuvraj Dyal contributed 10 as Gopaul claimed 2-8, Bishundial 2-15 and Heyliger 2-21.
Openers Robin Williams and Gavin Boodwah put Lusignan A on course with a stand of 43 with sensible batting. The right-handed Boodwah struck two fours and a six before he fell to Yuvraj Dyal for 24. Williams, who was named man-of-the-match, timed the ball well and counted three fours and a six before he failed to keep down a cut shot off Satesh Jainarine to depart for a top score of 29. Former Guyana U19 batsman Krishna Deosarran and Vishnu Ramjeet then added an unbroken third wicket stand of 59 to guide Lusignan A to 109-2 in 14.2 overs. The left-handed Deosarran played watchfully as he hit one four and a six in scoring 22, while Ramjeet made 22. Dyal and Jainarine picked up one wicket each.
Earlier, Lusignan B won the third place play off game by seven wickets against Fairfield. Batting first, Fairfield managed 116-7. Ramnarine Chatura slammed three fours and a six in scoring 38 while L. Tangoochandra made 16, Richard Chatura 15 and Wazim Mustafa 13. N. Persaud captured 3-13 and F. Kadir 2-26.
Shazaam Ali led Lusignan B chase with a fine unbeaten 61 which contained six fours and a six while Tameshwar Motiram made 18 and Navin Persaud 16.
Ramnarine Chatura of Fairfield was the competition’s leading run scorer with 244, while Yuvraj Dyal was the tournament’s leading wicket taker with 12 scalps.
Shameer Shahib of Banks DIH congratulated the finalists and lauded the ECCC for staging a successful tournament. He pledged their continued support with a bigger and better competition next year.
Anil Persaud of ECCC expressed gratitude to the sponsors. He thanked the fans as well as the media for their coverage. 19 teams participated in the competition which saw three centuries and four five-wicket hauls.
