Defending champions Albion Community Centre Cricket Club recently defeated arch rivals Port Mourant Cricket Club to win the annual Balram Shane Memorial 50 overs cricket match which is played annually between the two teams. The game which was played at the Albion Community Centre ground saw Port Mourant batting first and being bowled out for 124 in 36 overs. National left arm spinner Adrian Permaul picked up 6 wickets to slice through the Port Mourant batting line up. In their turn at the crease Albion replied with 126-6 with Adrian Sukwah scoring an unbeaten 60.
The two teams then engaged each other in a 10/10 cricket match which Albion won. Albion batting first made 103 then restricting Port Mourant to 72.
Albion received $120,000 and the beautiful Balram Shane trophy, while Port Mourant collected $110,000 all compliments of donor Mr. Deonarine Balram of the Balram Shane General Store.
Permaul received an incentive for being the man of the match and the best bowler on show, while Sukwah got one for the best batsman all compliments of Mr. Balram.
The Balram Shane Memorial match is played annually between the two teams in memory of Mr. Balram father Balram Shane, a former cricketer and ardent cricket fan who hailed from the area. The rivalry started in 1998.
At the presentation ceremony organizer Mr. Deonarine Balram of the Balram Shane General store at Rose Hall Corentyne, congratulated both clubs for their continued participation. He stated that apart from Cricket a volleyball competition is also played. He said that it is also their way of giving back to the community from which they garner their support.
Balram thanked his family and other supporters both at home and overseas for their unstinted and continued support over the years. He plans to organise a T20 competition next year in observation of the 20th year of the competition.
He was also loud in praise for President of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster for his stewards and support.
Over $500,000 was split between the two clubs and other organisations.
