A taxi driver is now in a serious condition in the New Amsterdam Hospital after he was struck down by a speeding car on the Sheet Anchor, East Canje Public Road. The accident occurred around 06:00 hrs on Friday.
Injured is Michael Wilson, called Michael Parris, or “Cow”, 56, of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice.
Reports are that Parris was heading towards New Amsterdam when he stopped his car HB 6550. He had crossed the road to assist a passenger with her load to enter his car. He was in the process of returning to his car with the load. At the same time motor car PLL 7562 driven by Rolston Brisport, 31, of Litchfield, West Coast Berbice was reportedly heading towards the New Amsterdam Hospital with a pregnant mother at a fast rate of speed when he struck Parris.
As a result of the impact, Parris landed on the bonnet of the car and passed through the windscreen. He was subsequently taken to the hospital by the same vehicle where he was admitted for emergency treatment.
He suffered serious injuries to his head, shoulder, hands and feet. His condition has been listed as serious. A breathalyzer test administered on Brisport showed no trace of alcohol.
A more than 100 feet skid mark was on the road in the vicinity of the accident.
The driver has been arrested and remains in custody as investigation continues.
