The Gafoor Foundation Support for Vulnerable Persons (SVP) on Thursday, awarded four students of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) bursaries from their yearly scholarship programme.
Mr Sattaur Gafoor, Chairman, and Mrs Ameena Gafoor, Administrator of the foundation, were both present at the ceremony which took place in the GTI Boardroom.
Students benefiting from the awards which are being distributed for the third year were John Bacchus, Tricia James, Sylvester Robertson and Feezal Dhanny.
GTI and the Gafoor Foundation SVP signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2016 which gave students the opportunity to benefit from an annual bursary award to help with school expenses.
Mr Gafoor shared that the foundation was encouraged by the past and present students’ diligence and enthusiasm in their choice to further their studies. He stressed that it is important for Guyana to have skilled resource persons to fulfil society’s needs, especially with the new opportunities that are being presented.
“Our young people must be equipped to take advantage of every prospect.”
Ameena Gafoor added that the foundation was established more than 20 years ago with the goal of assisting deserving students to stay in school and fulfil their educational goals at all levels by giving them some financial support.
“We hope that when these students are qualified that they contribute to nation building. We would also like to see students from all corners of Guyana apply for these awards.”
The Gafoor Foundation SVP is now reportedly moving forward with its plans to extend these awards to outlying vocational schools.
Mrs Gafoor is especially happy to note over the years, the increased number of female students that have successfully applied for the award.
