The car driver who on Sunday evening struck down Berbice Pastor, Cecil Agard, and drove away, has been slapped with five charges so far and remanded to jail.
The man Gavin Saunders, 51, of 30 Philadelphia Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to answer five charges.
He is charged with driving motor car PPP 2518 while being under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop after an accident, failing to render assistance, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving an unlicensed motor vehicle. All this happened on Sunday December 9 , around 20:00 hrs , on the Sheet Anchor Public road.
He was remanded to jail until December 21.
The serious nature of the offence and the fact that the victim is still hospitalized in a serious condition were factors taken in consideration.
The facts of the case were that on the date and time in question Pastor Agard, 76 of 73 Nurseville/ Tucber Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice and the founder of the Faith Deliverance Tabernacle Church of the same address, was on his way home after praying for some believers in the neighbouring East Canje area.
The Pastor was on his motorcycle CF 9858 when he was struck down by the heavily tinted speeding motor car on the Sheet Anchor Public Road.
He was thrown off his motor cycle; the impact crushed his right leg. As the bleeding pastor lay injured on the ground, the vehicle turned off its lights and accelerated from the scene.
Agard was picked up by residents and public spirited citizens who came out to assist and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was admitted for emergency treatment and underwent more than four hours of surgery. His leg was broken in four places; he also suffered injuries to his back and head.
The car was subsequently located some hours later parked at a popular night spot in the town. Saunders was imbibing and some females were in the car. The driver had claimed that a woman was driving the car.
The woman was found two days later and denied driving the car on the night in question. Saunders had denied hitting any one. He had initially resisted arrest and police reinforcement had to be summoned.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on him and he was found to be way over the legal limit. A search of the vehicle unearthed a bottle of rum and a cutlass among other things.
In the meanwhile Pastor Agard remains warded in a serious condition in the New Amsterdam Hospital. Investigations are continuing and more charges are likely.
