A mother of nine has been arrested and remanded to jail as police made a breakthrough into the spate of break and enter incidents and that occurred during the past week in the Stanleytown area.
Shonette Gonsalves-Sabola, 40, a house wife of 82 Savannah Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, appeared on Thursday before Magistrate Alex Moore in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of break and enter.
She is accused, on Monday December 10, of breaking into the dwelling house of Daphney Pitt-Joseph at Lot 43 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam,
Berbice and stealing one finger ring valued at $60,000; one gold chain valued at $120,000; a bag containing several other documents; one five pound tin of milk; one box of biscuits; a pair of slippers $3,500 and $65,000 cash.
The woman when asked to speak told the court that she doesn’t know anything about the matter. She stated that she is a domestic worker and a part time cook.
In opposing bail Police Prosecutor Inspector Bernard Brown asked for bail to be refused. He said most of the articles were found in a suitcase in the home of the accused.
He further stated that at the time of her arrest the accused was wearing the victim’s slippers. Brown also told the court that the accused had not been cooperating with the police.
“She encourages her son to do bad things at nights. She told the police that she did not know where he is and hadn’t seen him for some time”.
The Prosecutor also said that the matter is still under investigation and other charges pending.
The woman begged not to be remanded since she has three young children to look after. She was remanded to jail until January 14.
