Thirty pupils were yesterday the recipients of spectacles to aid their vision, compliments of Mings Optical and the Lions Club of D’Urban Park.
All of the recipients were earlier found to have vision defects after undergoing comprehensive eye examinations free of charge during the month of November by optometrists at Mings Optical, situated at Urquhart and New Market Streets, Georgetown.
During the simple ceremony to hand over the items, the children, teachers and parents were sensitized about the importance of regular eye examinations, and also on how to care for their brand new spectacles. Good vision care is an important part of healthy development and success at school and daily activities for children. This was particularly emphasized during the month of October when World Sight Day [WSD] was observed.
WSD is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. This year’s Call to Action for WSD was “Eye Care Everywhere.” Strategies were geared at finding solutions to ensure that ‘everyone, everywhere’ has access to sight.
As part of the observance here, the Lions Club of D’Urban Park hosted its annual eye screening activity at seven schools around Georgetown, an event that saw hundreds of children being screened. The children were pupils drawn from Smith’s Memorial Primary, St. Pius Primary, Enterprise Primary, Tucville Primary, St. Thomas More Primary, South Ruimveldt Primary and St. Sidwell’s Primary.
