After falling agonisingly short in recent times, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) will be looking to dust out their trophy cabinet and add a senior title to their collection; something that they have not done in decades when they play Northern Rangers tonight in the Turbo knockout final.
Set for the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue, the tournament culminates with the two best teams meeting in the final according to Petra Organisation’s (the hosts of the tournament) Co-director, Troy Mendonca.
“The final has an ever improving GFC coming up against Northern Rangers that have a mixture of experienced players and youngsters,” Mendonca posited during a press brief with the two captains yesterday.
He believes that the entire tournament was of high quality with several close encounters and he noted fan support for this evening’s final will be integral for both teams.
Mendonca further added, “The defending champions, Police FC has been booted and we will crown a new champion tomorrow (tonight) and I just want to encourage fans to come out and witness these two great teams play quality football with the winner copping the grand cash prize of $800,000.”
GFC through player/coach, Dellon Cadogan, has admitted that the side is under pressure to ensure they secure a senior tournament trophy after over 50 years without a triumph.
“Yes we do feel pressured because we need to get it done. We need to win a senior tournament; we’ve been right up there with the best for the longest while,” he explained.
“We are not underestimating Northern Rangers but we are quite confident that we can get the job done… You can expect a lot from GFC tomorrow [today]… We predict victory by two goals clear,” Cadogan expounded.
Nigel Denny, Skipper of Northern Rangers noted that there is a lot to prove from his side especially after falling to the fellow city club recently.
“It will be a very good game. Kinda be a grudge match for me and my team because every time we come up against GFC, they always give us a lil fight, beating us in the last two games we played.”
Denny who scored the vital equaliser in his team’s victory over Santos in the semifinals, noted that, “We [have] got a lot of experienced players with the right mix of youths which will make for an interesting final.”
Tonight’s final is set for 21:00 with the third place playoff between Mahaica Determinators and Santos will set for 19:00hrs.
The runners up will pocket $400,000, third $200,000 and fourth $100,000.
