Investigators in Berbice are treading on thin ice. They were forced to release the three persons that were detained for the Number 19, Corentyne robbery. There was reportedly no evidence to tie them to the crime.
They were arrested the day after the robbery that took place at Prakash Supermarket where a pregnant woman was beaten along with her 19-year-old son and the proprietor of the business, Dewen Ramdeo.
Armed bandits had stormed Ramdeo’s business on December 5, last, and ordered customers and his relatives to lie flat on floor while they demanded jewellery, cash and items from the supermarket. Ramdeo’s pregnant relative who was spending some time with him and his teen daughter was in the upper flat of the two-storeyed concrete business-home sleeping when she was confronted by an armed perpetrator.
He reportedly dragged her by the hair, stripped her and dealt her three lashes to the head and broadsided her about the upper body. Ramdeo had told this publication that approximately $600,000 was stolen from the cashier’s drawer while US$1,000 and $15.000 in local currency and jewellery were taken from the pregnant woman and her two teenage children.
The men escaped on bicycles that were stolen from villagers.
A pair of gloves and a hat belonging to one of the bandits were left behind. These were supposed to be picked up by the police. However that was not done until a call was made to a senior officer informing him that the evidence was still lying around in the supermarket 10 hours after the ordeal.
Investigators had not visited the actual scene when they showed up the night the robbery occurred.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News has noticed that the majority of armed robberies that took place within the last few months are yet to be solved.
Deputy Commander Wayne DeHearte had told the press at the recent Christmas Policing presentation that the police have gained the public’s trust and more persons are coming forward with information on crimes committed in an effort to assist the police.
Four armed robberies committed in Black Bush Polder are yet to see anyone arrested and charged for the crimes while two in Bush Lot, one at a Chinese Restaurant and another at the home of a single parent, have not had anyone arrested and charged as well.
A rape and robbery committed at Letter Kenny where one suspect was arrested and released on station bail is also left stagnant. It should be noted that in that incident the victim of the rape-robbery had positively identified the suspects since they were not masked and they were known to her.
Adding to the list of unsolved armed robberies were a spate of break and enters throughout the region during the same period.
Statistics provided by police in B Division show that Robbery under Arms have increased to 32 in 2018 as against 27 committed in 2017. Rape also increased from 35 in 2017 to 45 in 2018.
