Four children, including a thirteen-day-old baby are among seven persons who were left homeless yesterday after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their two-storey wooden house.
The house is situated at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne.
The building is owned by 45-year-old Farida Khan, who was not home at the time. However, her daughter-in-law, Devi Ramkisson along with her four children were at home.
According to Ramkisson, around 10:00hrs, she was washing clothes in the front yard when she noticed smoke emanating from the roof and sounded an alarm. Her husband, Anil Naipaul 37, who was nearby, rushed to the scene but the fire was already raging and he was unable to save anything.
According to reports, Naipaul immediately contacted the Skeldon Fire Station but the fire tender arrived several minutes later.
“I called and they said they coming but showed up over an hour after.” When them meet the house done bun down,” adding that there was no water in the fire tender.
Long after the fire was extinguished, the family was still at the scene, apparently at a loss as to where they would spend the night.
They are appealing for assistance and can be contacted on 638-1956.
