On a flat track and slow outfield at Bourda yesterday 23-year-old pacer Bernard Bailey’s 6-36 put GCC in control over police
on the opening day of their Noble House Seafoods two-day second division cricket final.
In bright sunshine, Police, the 2014 Champions, lost wickets at regular intervals and were dismissed for 107 with Jason Heyliger hitting three fours in a top-score of 32.
Only Paul Tendell who made 23 with a couple of boundaries, Trevor Benn whose 17 included a six and a four and Andrew Lyght 10 with two fours, reached double figures for Police.
Bailey got support from Renaldo Ali-Mohammed (2-30) and Timothy McAlmont (2-22) for GCC who ended the day on 80-3 with Ali-Mohamed on 16 and McAlmont on two.
GCC, winners of the inaugural Tournament in 2010, were kept in shackles by the Cops before Skipper Keston Hardcourt broke the painfully slow opening stand when he bowled GCC’s Captain Khemraj Jaikaran (3) at 7-1 in the eight over.
The left-handed Deonarine Seegobin flicked Hardcourt for the first boundary of the innings in the 10th over and along Anssuega Rodrigues batted solidly against controlled bowling but struggled to score freely.
The very vocal Benn was introduced and eased the pressure with short pitched bowling on a surface on which ‘length’ bowling was required.
Seegobin pivoted and pulled Benn, who was a member of Guyana’s First-Class squad but failed to play a match, for four as his introduction coincided with an increase in the scoring rate.
Rodrigues (16) was caught and bowled by Heyliger at 51-2 just before the close and with Seegobin eight short of a fifty he was run out to leave the home team on 78-3.
McAlmont joined Ali-Mohammed and together they took their team to the close without further loss with 28 needed to get for first innings points.
Earlier, Ali-Mohammed removed Reginald Rodrigues (0) and Kemol Savory (0) to leave the Cops on 4-2 and when Bailey took a stupendous return catch as Lyght drove powerfully, Police were 19-3.
Heyliger and Tendell carried to score to 48 with positive stroke-play before Bailey bowled Tendell.
Off-spinner McAlmont struck twice in two balls to leave Police on the ropes at 62-6. He first had Pernell London (3) brilliantly caught at short extra cover by little Zakary Jodah before bowling Hardcourt for a first ball duck.
Bailey took the next four wickets as he trapped Benn, back in cricket after a lengthy break, LBW after being sweetly cover driven for four.
Eon Rogueries (0) was struck in front and lingered at the crease questioning the Umpires’ verdict, while Heyliger was taken at point at 102-9 and the impressive Bailey, who represented Suriname in ICC’s division 5 cricket, polished off the innings by sending Hemchand Persuad’s stumps for a walk.
Today’s final day action is scheduled to commence at 10:30hrs.
