The murder trial of Phileman Budhoo, called “Kevin”, 22, of No. 63 Village Corentyne, Berbice, is continuing in the Berbice High Court before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and a mixed jury.
Budhoo is accused of murdering Mohamed Fizal Mahmood Baksh, called ‘Sugar Cake’, a money changer, of No. 63 Village Corentyne, Berbice between December 21 and December 24, 2015 at the No. 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accused is being represented by attorneys-at-law Arudranauth Gossai and Mursalene Bacchus in association with attorney-at-law, and Surihya Sabsook.
Attorney-at-law Mandel Moore is appearing for the state.
In his caution statement, Budhoo said that “about 08:00 hrs on Monday, 21st December 2015, I called Sugar Cake and tell he that some people want do business , let him go to No. 64 Health Centre dam, a gon be waiting deh. “I tek out money from all four pockets, which was $600,000. I then return the car. I go to Parsram Travel service and buy a ticket to Trinidad for $66,000. Me buy two pants and a shirt. I catch a car to Berbice Bridge and then go to Republic Bank Rosignol and deposit $488,000. I go by the airport and catch a plane next day and went to Trinidad.
“I carry he by the No. 63 Beach because I did want money and the only way, ah had to kill he . A sorry fu wah me do”.
The prosecution called a number of witnesses, including Government Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan, who gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to a fractured skull.
In an unsworn statement from the dock, Budhoo told the court that he had rented a car to go and buy goods to take to his sister. He subsequently bought a plane ticket to Trinidad and went to the airport and flew out the next day to spend the Christmas holiday. When he returned the car, he hadn’t any large sum of money.
Whilst in Trinidad, he was informed by his relatives that the police were looking for him for a murder. He subsequently returned to Guyana and was arrested by the police from his lawyer’s office. He was questioned and beaten to sign a statement. He hadn’t a problem with “Sugar Cake” and didn’t see him on that day.
The prosecution is contending that the accused made arrangements with Baksh about some financial transaction to be done with some other persons. He subsequently took Baksh to the No. 63 Beach where he robbed and killed him.
Baksh’s body was discovered in a bushy section of the No. 63 Village, Corentyne foreshore, three days after he was reported missing.
The accused had reportedly fled the country. Police had found a wristwatch, a calculator, a phone and a piece of wood among other things nearby.
