Wins from Keevin Allicock, Emmerson Farley, Aston Niles and Kevin McKenzie kept the Golden Arrow Head flying high on Night two of the Caribbean Boxing Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Friday night.
Another disappointing turn-out which included Director of Sport Christopher Jones, watched Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis loose the only fight by a Guyanese on a night which produced entertaining action.
The night began with Sean Griffith beating Julius Kesney in a local match-up before the Referee stopped the Novice Light Welterweight clash between McKenzie and Dominican Nathaniel Joseph in round two after the Dominica contingent only arrived here early Friday morning.
With pulsating Soca and Reggie music emanating from the sound system and with Reds Perriera performing duties as fight announcer, Guadeloupe’s Steeven Denoe swung with wild shots and employed ‘holding’ tactics and lost on points in a Light Welter to Bajan Justin Edwards.
Barbadian Lamer Tull hurt Dominican Royle Williams before the Referee stopped the fight in the third round in their Novice Welterweight bout, Deion Pruitt of the USVI beat Grenadian Timon Gilbert in a Light Heavy
battle, Bajan Jamel Edmond defeated Rufus Vesprey from Grenada in an entertaining Welterweight contest, while Grenadian Darlel Sylvester failed to capitalise on his reach advantage and lost to Trini Andrew Fermín in their Heavyweight fight.
St Lucian Arthur Langalier, who had a couple of standing 8 counts, gained a points verdict over Bajan Shakaun Lashley in their middleweight bout, much to the disapproval of the small crowd before Shevon Lewis of Grenada stopped T&T’s Nigel Paul in 2:57 in the first round of their Super Heavyweight bout.
The Novices Light Heavyweight fight was won by Guyanese Niles after his contest against T&T’s Karrie John was stopped in 1:38 in the second round.
The Light Welterweight bout between ‘Superman’Lewis and T&T’s Micheal Amsterdam saw shots galore from every angle but Lewis did not fight a tactical fight and began lunging and missing big swings as if Amsterdam was using ‘Kryptonite’ to nullify Superman’s power.
Both fighters were in attacking mode with the south paw Amsterdam flicking right jabs at Lewis’ head and Lewis counter-attacking with digs to the body as they fought toe to toe and traded blows.
It was an untidy fight as both boxers got themselves in ungainly positions and at one stage Lewis picked up Amsterdam off his feet in wrestling fashion. Amsterdam back peddled and danced out of range forcing Lewis to lean forward and miss some big shots as the pair continued to go after each other with Amsterdam gaining a points decision.
Despite not using more jabs Allicock completely dominated T&T’s Anthony Joseph with lightning fast four-punch combinations in their bantamweight contest but the Trini fought back with shots of his own. But although the skilful Allicock was hit on a few occasions, most of Joseph’s punches were not effective.
Watched by his aunt who travelled from Carnival Country for the Championships, Joseph was ‘bullied’ by the 19-year-old Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) pugilist, who won Silver at the Commonwealth Youth games last year and Gold at the Caribbean Boxing Championships.
Joseph found himself on the ropes as the stylish Allicock backed him up with upper-cuts and a series of shots to body as the Guyanese demonstrated excellent use of the ring. Joseph put up a brave resistance but was no match for the Caribbean’s best teenage boxer who arrived at the ring in flamboyant fashion accompanied by his entourage carrying a huge Guyana flag.
Another action-packed bout was the Novice Super Heavyweight fight between crowd favourite Farley and Grenada’s Andy Andall. The burly Farley, a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), arrived in the ring to chats of ‘Farley, Farley, Farley’ and the gathering of less than 400 sounded like 10,000 as their voices could be heard all the way to Camp Ayangana.
The Grenadian came out throwing bombs at the Solider but Farley showed good defence and most of Andall’s thunderous punches were taken on the glove and shoulder of Farley.
Andall continued to be aggressive in the second stanza; throwing right hooks to the head and digs to the body but Farley then upped the tempo and both boxers connected to each other with powerful shots in the fast paced contest.
In the final round it seemed that Andall had punched out most of his energy and Farley was now on the attack with telling blows as he moved forward against the tired looking Grenadian.
But Andall fought back and Farley, urged on by the raucous fans in the stands, took a straight right to his face which stopped him in his tracks. But Farley took his punches like a man and launched a brutal attack with shots to body and head to win on points.
The welterweight match between Grenada’s Vesprey and Bajan Edmond had the crowd on its feet as the Grenadian threw the harder punches as the boxers traded shots at close range. Vesprey backed up the Bajan with a three-punch combination but he retaliated with an upper-cut to end the first round.
In the second round blows were exchanged on the inside and heads clashed resulting in Edmond sustaining a cut above his left eye and the injury was treated by the ring doctor.
When the battle resumed Vesprey charged the Bajan and scored with a left jab followed by a right to the head but Vesprey countered with an upper-cut.
The final round saw the fighters unleashing a flurry of punches in bunches but neither of them were about to quit and a left to the face of Andall caused another stoppage as the cut reopened.
Although the boxers were showing signs of exhaustion the intensity was maintained with the Bajan scoring the cleaner punches in the dying stages of the round to win on points.
The Championships concludes this evening from 18:00hrs.
