High Court Judge Jo-Ann Barlow yesterday imposed a life sentence on a man convicted for engaging in sexual activity a one-year-old female.
Rodney Kurtzious, was found guilty of the offence of sexual activity with a child after a jury returned a verdict of 11 guilty – 1 not guilty at the Sexual Offences Court in Georgetown yesterday.
The incident is said to have occurred on July 27, 2017. Kurtzious had pleaded not guilty to offence. However, when given a chance to speak before the sentence was handed down yesterday, the convict offered no statement to the Court.
Justice Barlow on the other hand noted that the case, like many others with similar circumstances, is quite troubling.
“It is even more troubling given that the victim is a baby and a close relative of Kurtzious,” the Judge said.
“You not only breached the trust of her mother and other children that were left in your care, since they too witnessed the incident… but after the incident, the baby had to be hospitalized for several days, due to the severity of the injuries.”
The judge noted that the victim was left with body parts which were torn.
“You have not only torn this child’s parts, but you have torn your family apart and you must suffer the consequences.”
Noting the incident is a worst case scenario, which she found no mitigating factors, Justice Barlow told Kurtzious that the maximum sentence would be imposed. Kurtzious was therefore sentenced to life in prison, with a possibility of parole only after 25 years.
