The first Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers schools football league which is also sponsored by Ansa McAl through their Icool, Smalta and Lyrix brands is set to conclude on Sunday at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground with the final four matches.
Twelve schools picked from Georgetown, West and East Demerara along with Linden have been competing in this historic tournament that kicked off last month and ahead of this weekend’s play, one of the top three teams in the points standing will be able to lift the championship trophy.
Currently, Lodge Secondary are top with 27 points while
Annandale are second with a lesser goal difference while tournament favourites Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) are third with 26 points; each team with one game remaining.
Lodge that has lost one game in the league will play the unbeaten and prolific CWSS side that has netted an incredible 54 goals in their ten games so far, the final game of the competition which will decide who will lift the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Cup.
In an invited comment, Manager of Lodge Leon Bishop posited that it is a must win game for the city side and
he will be fighting fire with fire as Lodge intends to go out attacking. Along with the Skipper Thurston Gordon and their leading scorer Derwin George (10 goals), Lodge will be depending on standout performers Ricky Stuart and Shemroy Mayers to lead the charge, with qualification for the KFC Goodwill tournament at the back of their mind as well.
The Linden side will have a Mayers of their own in Andre, who has also been outstanding with his teammates Tyresse Lewis, Randy Pickering and George Stephen also able to change the game.
Second place Annandale have the best chance of winning the league because their final match will be against Queen’s College (QC), Sunday’s first encounter. QC have only registered two victories with the last win being a walkover against Dolphin Secondary.
Annandale have the necessary firepower which they have demonstrated
throughout the event with five players that have represented Guyana in the sport. The winning team along with the runners-up will join Annai Secondary of Region 9 and Shiva Boys’ Hindu
College of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) to contest the KFC Goodwill Schools Football tournament which will run from December 18 – 22.
