The mother of Attorney-at-law George Thomas was held at gunpoint, then gagged, bound and robbed in her Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara home at around 09:00 hrs on Tuesday.
Police said that the suspect gained access to the Tenth Avenue home of Eunice Thomas, 74, under the pretext of visiting a relative of the victim.
Kaieteur News understands that the elderly woman was alone at home when a young man, with a flop-hat concealing his features, entered the yard and rapped at the front door.
The woman looked outside, and the ‘visitor’ enquired about her grandson.
When Mrs. Thomas opened the door, the ‘visitor’ held her at gunpoint and pushed her further into the house. He then gagged the elderly woman with a stocking and tied her hands behind her back with a pair of plastic handcuffs.
Kaieteur News understands that the robber then began asking for specific pieces of jewellery. He eventually carted off some $1.5M in cash and jewellery.
According to sources, Mrs. Thomas eventually managed to shift the gag and call for a neighbour, who eventually arrived and untied her.
Police have since arrested a man who fits the robber’s description.
