The 2018 season of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) wrapped up in grand style on Sunday afternoon last when Runica White, a Buddys Gym member became the first woman to Squat over 400-pounds without the aid of equipment and a staggering 28 records broken on the day at Saints Stanislaus College Auditorium.
White, competing in the Junior Classic and Open Classic 84+kg Classes not only inked her name in the books in that regard but also set five (5) records including four (4) in the Junior Classic division.
Her day did not end there as she also copped the Best Overall Female Lifter award which carried with it a trophy and a $50,000 cheque, compliments of the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
In the battle of the strongmen, the man from the East, Hardcore Gym member, Vijai Rahim (74kg Open-Equipped) emerged as the Best Overall athlete, a total of 20 males taking to the platform while there were six females on show.
Like White, Rahim was rewarded with a trophy and a $50,000 cheque from the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Department of Culture Youth and Sport.
The small but appreciative band of fans on hand included former President of Guyana Donald Ramotar, former GAPLF President Peter Green, Director of Sport Christopher Jones and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture Youth and Sport, Melissa Tucker-
Grimes.
The day started off with Space Gym’s Junica Pluck competing in the 63kg Open Equipped Category lifting her way to four new records in the Squat
(135.5kg), Bench Press (68.0kg), Deadlift (133.0kg) and Total (336.5kg).
White powered to respective Squat (182.5kg), Bench Press (75.0kg), Deadlift (196.0kg) and Total (453.5kg) records in the Junior Classic 84+ and Open Classic 84+kg Squat record of 453.5kg.

Lisa Oudit (Buddys Gym), Open Classic 84kg Class, Deadlift (151.0kg) and Total (336.0kg).
Natoya Robinson (Buddys Gym), Open Classic 84+kg Class, Bench (93.0kg) and Deadlift (200.0kg).
Blossom Babb (Tower Gym), Open Classic 84kg Class, Bench Press (65.0kg). Ramzam Mohamed (HardCore Gym), Junior Equipped 120kg Class, Squat (285.0kg), Deadlift (245.0kg) and Total (672.5kg).
Bjorn Williams (GAPLF), Open Classic 105kg Class, Bench (150.0kg) and Total (635.0kg).
Frank Tucker (Kingsrow Barbel Club), Master 3 Equipped 105kg Class, Deadlift (205.0kg).
Joseph Stoll (Buddys Gym), Master 2 Classic 105kg Class, Deadlift (200.0kg).
Carlos Petterson (Home Gym), Open Equipped 93kg Class, Squat (320.0kg) and Total (810.0kg). Vijai Rahim (Hardcore Gym), Open Equipped 74kg Class, Bench (172.5kg) and Deadlift (297.5kg).
Noel Cummings (Buddys Gym), Master 4 Classic 66kg Class, Squat (130.5kg) and Deadlift (170.0kg). Franklyn Brisport-Luke (GAPLF), Master 2 Classic 66kg Class, Squat (132.5kg).
Hardcore Gym emerged as the Top Gym and received a trophy.
