The use of the ‘date rape’ drug ecstasy appears to be on the rise among youths, but the good news is that many of the supplies are being apprehended and their supplies intercepted, thanks to agents from the Custom Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) is catching and prosecuting others.
Ecstasy, the popular synthetic drug commonly known among youths as, “The Pill or Molly” is becoming a growing presence in schools. CANU recently disclosed that the ‘date rape drug’ ecstasy is being sold to students in at least five schools across Regions three and four.
There is the belief that the drug use is linked to many explicit videos of young girls.
However, CANU officials are working relentlessly to track down the traffickers.
In the first eight months of the year, CANU seized 104 grammes of heroin and 100 grammes of crystal methamphetamine. The agency disclosed that it seized 534 kilogrammes, 660 grammes of marijuana.
CANU said it also confiscated 161 kilogrammes, 870 grammes of cocaine.
Officials are calling on parents, religious institutions, and communities to assist law enforcement agencies in the fight against the illicit drug trade.
So far, at least eight persons have been arrested and placed before the courts for allegedly trafficking ecstasy. They include taxi drivers, nurses and in some instances couples.
Recently, a father was placed before the court after he was allegedly caught with 142 grams of ecstasy pills.
This charge comes months after the accused, 32-year-old -old Steve Fiedtkou of Mandela Avenue, Georgetown was freed on a charge which alleged that he caused the death of his wife in an accident.
Fiedkou denied the charge which alleged that on October 12, last, he had 256 grams of methamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as Ecstasy, equivalent to 142 grams of Net pills, in his possession.
He is currently out on $75,000 bail pending trial.
The very next day, two persons were arraigned before the same magistrate to answer to a similar charge.
Kelder Halley, 21, of Gibson Street, Guyhoc Park Georgetown and Samuel Bruce called Samie Waltz, 25, a taxi driver of Tucville, Georgetown were charged for trafficking ecstasy.
They both denied the charge, which stated that on October 25, last, at Gibson Street, Guyhoc Park, they had in their possession some 63 grams of ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking.
According to CANU Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford, the duo was apprehended during a sting operation.
Sandiford told the court that Halley is reportedly the mastermind. Both persons were released on $150,000 bail each.
Also before the court is the owner of a taxi service, Darrel John, 25, who was charged in February with trafficking ecstasy to students.
The first charge against John stated that on February 12, at Lot 141 Fifth Street, Alberttown, he had two grams of ecstasy in his possession.
The reading of the second charge was held in-camera as the listed complainants were minors. It was alleged that between December 1, 2017 and January 21, 2018, John trafficked ecstasy tablets to them.
John denied both charges and was released on a total of $170,000 bail.
According to information, ranks from CANU discovered a drug ring inside two secondary schools in Georgetown.
CANU ranks then launch an investigation after a Queen’s College student fell ill in January and had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
It was reported that a group of students were selling the psychoactive drugs to their peers inside the school as well to those at North Georgetown Secondary.
In April, Lonsdale Hope, 34, and his common-law wife Shelly Ann Gilgeous, 27, were charged with having in their possession, 66 grammes (equivalent to 0.14 pounds) of ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking. They were each granted $150,000 bail.
According to information, on the day in question, ranks from the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch intercepted a vehicle, with licence plate PSS 2037, in which the defendants were the lone occupants.
A search was conducted on the vehicle and a bag with ecstasy was found in a female handbag, which Gilgeous identified as hers, which was in the back passenger’s seat. She allegedly told officers that Hope gave her the substance to keep.
Also before the court is a 34-year-old man, of Third Avenue, Bartica, who was allegedly found in possession of 28.3 grams of ecstasy at the Bartica Stelling.
