Heavily armed security personnel in front of businesses can cause unnecessary panic to customers, says the Guyana Police Force (GPF). This statement comes after the force conducted an inspection of private security services operating in and around Georgetown yesterday.
The purpose of the exercise was to ensure strict adherence to the terms and condition of their licences and the Laws of Guyana. The team was headed by Senior Superintendent Errol Watts, who is the Second-in-Command of Operations.
It was observed that at a number of businesses where private security firms with armed personnel were visited, it was found that these security personnel were not adhering to basic safety requirements and other important prerequisites governing their existence.
“In addition, heavily armed personnel were seen in full view of the public and this can cause unnecessary panic to shoppers. These security personnel were dressed in civilian clothing without having on their Company’s Logo and authorized uniforms,” the GPF said.
According to a statement by the GPF, the business owner(s) and the security guards in particular were spoken to and were advised to operate within their respective premises and not the pavement provided for use by the general public.
This situation will be monitored closely by the police to ensure adherence and where breaches are found, appropriate sanctions would be applied, the police noted.
