I will close my thoughts on this issue regarding Mr. Leroy Smith with this correspondence on the attacks of the ‘A’ Division and the Commander, Marlon Chapman.
The thrust of my observations was on the critical role of the media and what is perceived to be an abuse of the privileges for a media person. I took the liberty of viewing Mr. Smith as a media person.
Mr. Smith is supposed to be one of the voices of the people, sitting on the fence with issues and not expected to take sides.
Mr. Smith can paint it anyway he wants, the sustained commentaries on ‘A’ Division within a few days compared to the absence of commentaries on other police divisions (and I am using his arguments), are stark.
It can only lead to the conclusion that commentaries are deliberate, designed to sway the persons who read or follow him in forming an impression of a particular division.
Now, again, I want to encourage Mr. Smith and any media person who is willing to pursue the profession, to do so. It is an honorable profession.
However, it must not be perceived that we are using those Fourth Estate privileges, and privileges they are, to attack the citizens and institutions in this country.
While there is fair comment, I humbly submit that these comments must be fair to all and in good taste.
There must be no continual perception that Mr. Smith is on the attack mode.
There is a correlation between the time of his arrests and the time of commentaries.
What conclusions do one arrive at?
I hope he gets the gist or else he would be killing the messenger.
Hear the message, Mr. Smith.
Yours Respectfully,
Mike Singh Sr.
