The administration is banking on President David Granger making a full recovery from his cancer treatment. As of now, there are no considerations for a possible presidential replacement, as the medical analysis does not compel such.
The disclosures were made yesterday by State Minister, Joseph Harmon, who was being questioned about President Granger’s capacity to manage after taking gruelling sessions of chemotherapy.
The treatments for many patients are draining, leaving many of them weak and needing time to rest.
With the President’s workload a highly demanding one, there have been concerns raised about how he will cope.
According to Harmon, since returning from Cuba recently, the President has reduced his workload but is very much in command of the “business of the state”.
In fact, Granger, 73, is doing better than when he left for Cuba for medical checks and intervention a few weeks ago.
The situation was serious as the President was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, the disease-fighting network in the body.
The President is expected to leave again, on Tuesday, for another round of treatment in Cuba, the State Minister disclosed.
According to the spokesman, there has been an outpouring of support for the President and his family, from the citizens, business community and even the Opposition.
Expressing the President’s gratitude for the outpouring, Harmon said that he is continuing to work “assiduously” to push the Green State agenda, a brainchild programme of the President.
As of now, the analysis of the President’s condition is that it is treatable, Harmon said.
“…and that as he receives his treatment that his condition will get better and better. That is what the analysis, which we have and what we working on.”
There have not therefore been questions of other issues, the official noted.
“We continue to support his vision. We are working together as a Coalition. In fact the President’s illness has brought us closer together, and we are working assiduously to bring those benefits which the Guyanese people voted for us in 2015 and which they required.”
